Backgammon is one of the oldest known games. The Royal Game of Ur, which seems to be a version of Backgammon was played around 2600 BC in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq). It is also known the Romans played a version of Backgammon, called Tabula. Modern Backgammon is a game for two players. Each player has 15 pieces (men) which they take turns moving round the board according to the roll of the two dice: the winner being the one who is first to move (bear off) all his pieces off the board. While Backgammon is fairly easily to learn, and does involve luck of the dice, it also involves considerable skill in creating strategies, calculated risk-taking, and assessing odds.
