The first jigsaw puzzle was produced around 1760 by John Spilsbury, an English engraver and mapmaker. Spilsbury pasted maps on wood and cut them into small pieces. Teachers then used these "dissected maps" to educate children about geography. Since their invention in the 18th century, jigsaw puzzles have become probably the most popular form of puzzle.
