Reversi (also known as Othello, which is the Mattel trademarked version) is an abstract strategy board game for two players. The game is played on an 8X8 square board, with flippable pieces which are dark on one side, and light on the other. Four pieces (two light-side up, and two dark-side up) are placed initially in standard arrangement at the center of the board, The players play as the dark and light sides, and take turns placing new pieces on the board. Each new piece must placed such that there exists at least one straight line (horizontal, vertical or diagonal) of pieces, that begins with the new piece, contains a continuous line of the opposite color pieces (which of course belong to the other player), and ends with a piece of the same color. All the opposite color pieces in such lines are then flipped over. The game ends when the board is filled up, or when neither player can make any more legal moves. At that point, the winner is determined by counting who has the most pieces of their color on the board. Reversi is a pure skill game with no luck. It combines easy-to-learn mechanics, with extremely complex and deep strategy. Mattel summarized this aspect of their game, with their tagline: "A minute to learn, a lifetime to master."
