Settlers of Catan is a strategic board game for 3 to 6 players. The object of the game is to establish a colony on the previously uninhabited island of Catan. The board, which represents the island, is made up of hexagonal segments that can be put together in a multitude of different ways, which ensures each game is different each time. In the game, each player can build towns and cities, collect resources, and trade resources with other players. The object of the game is to score victory points by completing various objectives such as building a town, or creating the longest road, etc. The game does involve some dice throwing, but the outcome is usually determined by strategy rather than luck. It is relatively simple to learn the game's mechanics, but depth of play makes it a challenging game to play. The game is well-suited to family play, as there is lots of interaction between players, no players are eliminated, and there are goals that all the players can strive for. In addition to the original game, there are many spin-offs and related products. Some of these require the basic Settlers of Catan game to play, whereas others are separate standalone games.
