Product Description:
"I have always a slight feeling of pity for the man who has no knowledge of chess, just as I would pity the man who has remained ignorant of love. Chess, like love, like music, has the power to make men happy. The way to this happiness I have tried to show in this book." — Author's Preface
While there are many chess instruction books available, few have achieved the lofty stature of the present volume. Fewer still have been written by a legendary International Grandmaster whose pedagogical skills rivaled the chess prowess that enabled him to demolish opponents at the board. An immediate success upon its first publication, The Game of Chess has become one of the game's enduring classics, considered by some critics the finest book ever written on the game.
Part of its success stems from Dr. Tarrasch's unorthodox approach to teaching chess: "I employ quite another method and one analogous to that a mother uses to teach her child to talk. I play with the beginner from the very start in that I put before him simple positions and from them explain the fundamentals of chess. It is the intuitive method of instruction. In this way the pupil learns chess quite easily, of that I am convinced."
To make it easier for the beginning student, Dr. Tarrasch also reverses the order in which the game is usually taught. Instead, he begins with the End-Game, since "obviously it is easier for the beginner to deal with a few men than the entire thirty-two." Then follows the heart of the book, an important and extensive discussion of the Middle Game. Analyzing the most important parts of hundreds of games, Tarrasch presents a comprehensive treatment of combination play, an aspect of chess for which he was especially renowned. Finally, he deals with the most complex part of the game — the Opening — and offers enlightening comments on many historically important variations.
Illustrated with over 340 diagrams and including 12 complete games, The Game of Chess remains one of the standard texts, a careful reading of which will improve the game of any player.

  • Used Book in Good Condition
Product Description:
This is the only book ever written entirely by Bobby Fischer. It is not to be confused with other books with similar names that were written by other authors. Here is the blurb on the original dust jacket, as published in 1959: THERE ARE 34 games in this book. The 13 from the U.S. Championship Tournament of 1957-58 and the prize-winning "Game of the Century" from the Third Rosenwald Trophy Tournament are penetratingly analyzed by Bobby Fischer, whose annotations provide invaluable instructions to the chess player of either average or advanced ability. In addition, this book includes the scores of Bobby Fischer's 20 games from the 1958 Portoroz Interzonal Tournament in which he played against the world's elite in chess, among them Tal, Gligorich, Petrosyan, and Bronstein. The games in this book reveal Bobby Fischer's brilliance in middle and end-game strategy, and also the latest and soundest treatments of popular openings-in particular, the Sicilian and King's Indian defenses. By playing these games over, the reader will become familiar with the patterns of the latest and soundest lines in chess, and will automatically begin to make stronger moves in his own games. At the age of fifteen, Bobby Fischer is the youngest international grandmaster of all time. He lives in Brooklyn, is a junior at Erasmus Hall High School, and is looking forward to the 1959 Candidates' Tournament, the winner of which challenges Mikhail Botvinnik for the world championship.

Product Description:
This is one of the most interesting, most unusual and most instructive chess books ever written. Seven of the World's Strongest Chess Grandmasters were each asked to write down their thoughts about how a serious chess amateur might best approach the problem of, very simply, "opening" a chess game? What makes this book especially great and useful is that each of these seven grandmasters had vastly different styles. For example, Bent Larsen used wild, unorthodox attacking lines, whereas Petrosian, who was capable of attacking when he wanted to, preferred to sniff out his opponent's chances and wait for the opponent to attack unsoundly and fall upon his own sword. This book therefore gives the practical amateur player seven different styles to choose from. Thus, he needs only to choose which one is most suitable for himself.

Product Description:
It took AlphaZero only a few hours of self-learning to become the chess player that shocked the world. The artificial intelligence system, created by DeepMind, had been fed nothing but the rules of the Royal Game when it beat the world's strongest chess engine in a prolonged match. The selection of ten games published in December 2017 created a worldwide sensation: how was it possible to play in such a brilliant and risky style and not lose a single game against an opponent of superhuman strength? For Game Changer, Matthew Sadler and Natasha Regan investigated more than two thousand previously unpublished games by AlphaZero. They also had unparalleled access to its team of developers and were offered a unique look ‘under the bonnet' to grasp the depth and breadth of AlphaZero's search. Sadler and Regan reveal its thinking process and tell the story of the human motivation and the techniques that created AlphaZero. Game Changer also presents a collection of lucidly explained chess games of astonishing quality. Both professionals and club players will improve their game by studying AlphaZero's stunning discoveries in every field that matters: opening preparation, piece mobility, initiative, attacking techniques, long-term sacrifices and much more. The story of AlphaZero has a wider impact. Game Changer offers intriguing insights into the opportunities and horizons of Artificial Intelligence. Not just in solving games, but in providing solutions for a wide variety of challenges in society. With a foreword by former World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov and an introduction by DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis.

  • Author: Irving Chernev
  • Publication Years: 1992
Product Description:

Here are 62 masterly demonstrations of the basic strategies of winning at chess, compiled and annotated by one of the game's most admired and respected writers. Each game offers a classic example of a fundamental problem and its best resolution, described and diagrammed in the clearest possible manner for players of every level of skill.
As Irving Chernev observes in the Introduction, "Who will doubt the tremendous power exerted by a Rook posted on the seventh rank after seeing Capablanca's delightfully clear-cut demonstration in Game No. 1 against Tartakower? And who will not learn a great deal about the art of handling Rook and Pawn endings (the most important endings in chess) after playing through Tarrasch's game against Thorold?"
Chernev's lively and illuminating notes on each game reveal precisely how Capablanca, Tarrasch, and other masters — Fischer, Alekhine, Lasker, and Petrosian among them — turn theory into practice as they attack and maneuver to control the board. Readers will find their techniques improving with each lesson as Irving Chernev dissects winning strategies, comments on alternate tactics, and marvels at the finesse of winning play, noting at the end of his Introduction: "I might just as well have called this collection The Most Beautiful Games of Chess Ever Played."

  • Author: Alexander Alekhine,Igor Zaitsev (foreword)
  • Publication Years: 2013
Product Description:
In chess literature, there have only been a few chess books that have immediately – and permanently – established themselves as classics, and this is one of them.

The original English edition, published 75 years ago, used English descriptive notation, contained only one photograph, no crosstables and was in two volumes. This new 21st-century edition, presented with modern algebraic notation, has

• combined both books into a single volume

• added more than three dozen archival photographs

• crosstables

• Alekhine’s complete match and tournament records

• a Foreword by Russian grandmaster Igor Zaitsev

• with many more diagrams

• a comprehensive computer-assisted analytical supplement is also available for free download

Whether you feel as if you are revisiting an old friend, or being introduced to this splendid game collection for the first time, you will marvel at how Alekhine’s games and works remain extraordinarily consonant with the modern approach.
